7 tips for your moving floor trailer in winter

Safely entering traffic to prevent unnecessary trouble

The dark, wet, and colder weather is almost upon us, which means that a few extra precautions are required to stay safe on the road. As we say at Kraker: ‘better safe than sorry!’

De-ice your platform

This is essential for your safety: make sure your platform is clear of ice at all times. Even though the platform of your K-Force trailer is safe and designed with a high balustrade and anti-slip flooring as standard, it is not ice-proof. Even a small amount of ice can create risks, so clear it properly from ice to stay safe.

If possible, park your trailer indoors overnight

If your trailer is loaded and ready for an early departure, park it indoors if possible. This does not only make it easier for you to get started (you can just get in and go), but also helps to prevent frost, especially if you’re transporting moist cargo. This will prevent freezing, which otherwise invariably occurs exactly where you don't want it.

Prevent frost between the floorboards

Moisture from your cargo can seep between your floorboards and if it freezes, the floor will malfunction, which will end up creating a lot of unnecessary stress and wasted time. You can avoid this from happening by greasing the seams between your floorboards with lubricant. First consult with your manager or the owner of the trailer on which product to use. The type of cargo determines which lubricant (or antifreeze) is suitable.

Always check your upper rail before starting work

In freezing conditions, always inspect the upper rail and remove any debris or residue before you get going. Residue can freeze and the system's brush cannot remove it. Make it a habit to check your upper rail and avoid these potential setbacks. This will help you avoid a lot of misery, such as unnecessary delays or, at worst, damage.

Keep your roof tarpaulin clear of water and ice

This requires special attention and there are various tools available. Unfortunately, there are still too many accidents due to ice sheets falling from a trailer roof onto the road, often with severe consequences for other road users. Authorities monitor this closely, and in case of an accident, both the carrier and driver can be held liable.

There are several systems available to help keep your roof clear of ice. Contact Kraker Trailers for more information.

Prevent damage to the piston rods of your sliding floor system

Always retract the cylinders before driving. If left extended, spray water and condensation can freeze on the piston rods, which could damage the cylinder seals when unloading. This can lead to costly repairs and unplanned downtime.

Are you clearly visible?

Needless to say, proper lighting on your trailer and good visibility is important all year round. This becomes critically important during the shorter and darker days of autumn and winter, in all circumstances. Regularly check the lighting on your truck and trailer

using this checklist:

  • front and rear lights of the truck and trailer
  • side marker lights
  • number plate lighting
